Jorgina de Freitas
Jorgina de Freitas was a Brazilian social security attorney who gained national infamy in the early 1990s for her involvement in a massive fraud scheme that embezzled billions from the National Institute of Social Security (INSS). As part of a group of conspirators, she forged millions in indemnity claims, leading to her conviction in 1992. After fleeing to Costa Rica, she was apprehended in 1998 and subsequently served 12 years in prison. Following her release in 2010, she lost her legal license and was ordered to repay R$ 200 million to the government. Jorgina passed away in July 2022, but her case remains a notable example of the widespread corruption that has plagued the INSS since its inception.
