José de Anchieta

José de Anchieta was a Spanish Jesuit missionary and one of the founders of São Paulo, Brazil. He arrived in Brazil in 1553 and played a significant role in the Christianization and education of the indigenous peoples. Notably, in a letter from 1575, he documented the devastating effects of heavy rains in the region, highlighting the historical context of severe weather events that have impacted Rio de Janeiro and surrounding areas for centuries.
