José Matías Delgado

José Matías Delgado was a prominent Salvadoran bishop and a pivotal figure in the early development of journalism in El Salvador. He is best known for his role in founding El Semanario Político Mercantil, the first newspaper in the country, which was published on July 31, 1824. Delgado's efforts in promoting the press were instrumental in fostering a culture of communication and civic engagement in the nascent republic. His legacy as a pioneer of journalism is celebrated annually on the Day of the Journalist in El Salvador.
