Josef Lochmatter was a pioneering Swiss mountain guide who, around the year 1900, traveled to Norway to learn skiing techniques. He made history as the first person to ascend iconic Swiss peaks such as the Weisshorn and Matterhorn on skis, using wooden skis that he crafted himself.
