Joseph R. McCarthy was a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, best known for his role in the anti-communist hysteria of the early 1950s, known as McCarthyism. His aggressive investigations and accusations against alleged communists in the government and other sectors of American society created a climate of fear and paranoia during the Cold War, ultimately leading to his censure by the Senate in 1954.
