Lili’uokalani
Lili’uokalani was the last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, ascending to the throne in 1891. She is best remembered for her efforts to restore the sovereignty of Hawaii and her struggle against the American imperialist forces that ultimately led to the overthrow of her government in 1893. In the face of significant political turmoil and pressure from American businessmen, Lili’uokalani attempted to implement a new constitution that would return power to the native Hawaiian people. After her abdication, she became a symbol of resistance and cultural identity, advocating for the rights and recognition of her people until her death in 1917.
