Luis Javier Muñoz y Capurón was born on December 15, 1858, in Guatemala City. He was a Jesuit priest who was expelled from Guatemala in 1871 but later returned to serve as the Archbishop after his ordination in Costa Rica in 1921. His tenure was short-lived, as he was expelled again by the government of José María Orellana less than a year after taking office. Muñoz y Capurón died on January 24, 1927, without being able to return to his homeland; his remains were later brought back and interred in the Metropolitan Cathedral in 1948.
