He was an early member of the clandestine 14 de Junio movement, opposing the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and endured imprisonment and torture during that era. After years of exile in Venezuela and Europe, he returned to the Dominican Republic and became a successful businessman in the footwear and leather goods industry, founding one of the first companies in the Tamboril Free Trade Zone. In addition to his business ventures, Bermúdez was an accomplished sculptor, winning the León Jiménez award and showcasing his work in national exhibitions. He served as governor of Santiago under President Leonel Fernández and was known for his approachability and dedication to community development. His legacy as a courageous advocate for democracy and progress is cherished by many.
