Mario Humberto Ruz Sosa is a prominent Mexican researcher and scholar in medical anthropology, a field that seeks to understand health and disease through cultural contexts. Born in 1952 in Hunucmá, Yucatán, he has dedicated nearly five decades to studying the intersections of medicine and anthropology, influenced by his upbringing among indigenous communities. Ruz Sosa's academic journey includes degrees from esteemed institutions such as UNAM and the University Iberoamericana, culminating in a doctorate in Ethnology from the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences in Paris. His work focuses on daily life among the Maya rather than elite cultures, emphasizing the importance of understanding local traditions and health practices. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field, he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes 2025 in History, Social Sciences, and Philosophy.
