The Marquês de Pombal, born Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, was a prominent Portuguese statesman in the 18th century, best known for his reforms that modernized Portugal after the 1755 earthquake. He is credited with establishing the Douro Valley as the first regulated wine region in the world in 1756, a pivotal moment in the history of Port wine, which continues to be celebrated today.
