Mattathias was a Jewish priest who played a pivotal role in the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire, inspiring a resistance movement against the forced Hellenization of the Jews, and is remembered for launching the revolt that his son Judah Maccabee would later lead to victory.
