
Maximilian Kolbe
Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Catholic friar and martyr, best known for his self-sacrifice during World War II. In 1941, he volunteered to take the place of a fellow prisoner condemned to death in Auschwitz, ultimately sacrificing his life for another's. Kolbe's actions exemplified his deep faith and commitment to the teachings of Christ, and he was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982, becoming a symbol of compassion and the human spirit's capacity for love in the face of brutality.
