
Michal Strenk
Michal Strenk was a Slovak immigrant born on November 10, 1919, in the village of Jarabina, Slovakia. He became a notable figure in World War II as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, famously leading his unit in raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in March 1945. This moment was captured in an iconic photograph that symbolized victory and sacrifice, ultimately leading to Strenk's posthumous recognition. He was killed in action shortly after the flag-raising, on March 1, 1945. His legacy is honored at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
