Mike Strank, originally named Michal Strenk, was a Slovak immigrant who gained fame as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He is best remembered for commanding the Marines who raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima, a moment captured in a historic photograph that resonated worldwide. Strank was born in Jarabina, Slovakia, and immigrated to the United States with his family as a child. He died in combat shortly after the flag was raised, and his contributions are commemorated at the Arlington National Cemetery.
