Orest Berezovsky
Orest Berezovsky, known as Metropolitan Onufriy, is the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and was recently in the news due to the revocation of his Ukrainian citizenship by President Volodymyr Zelensky. This decision was seen as a political maneuver aimed at exerting pressure on the UOC's congregation, which constitutes a significant portion of the Ukrainian populace. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) cited his previous Russian citizenship, which he allegedly failed to disclose, and his connections to the Moscow Patriarchate as reasons for the citizenship revocation. Onufriy has led the UOC since 2014 and has been a prominent figure in the church's struggle for independence from the Moscow Patriarchate, particularly following the church's declaration of autonomy in May 2022.
