Pope Leo I, also known as Leo the Great, was the Bishop of Rome from 440 to 461 AD. He is renowned for his theological contributions and his role in defining the nature of Christ, which were pivotal in the development of Christian doctrine. His most famous act of diplomacy was in 452 AD when he successfully negotiated with Attila the Hun, persuading him to spare Rome from invasion. Leo I's papacy also marked the strengthening of the authority of the papacy and the church's influence in political matters.
