Dom Raymundo Damasceno Assis, born in 1935 in Capela Nova, Minas Gerais, became a priest in 1968 and has served in various significant roles within the Catholic Church, including as a secretary-general of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) and president of the Consejo Episcopal Latino-Americano (Celam) from 2007 to 2011. He was also the president of the CNBB from 2011 to 2015, contributing to the Church's guidance in Brazil.
