Richard Nicolls

Richard Nicolls was the first English governor of New York, appointed to oversee the transition of New Amsterdam from Dutch to English control in 1664. A soldier with ties to the Duke of York, Nicolls is remembered for his diplomatic skills, having negotiated the peaceful surrender of the colony rather than using force. His leadership marked a significant turning point in the history of New York, which he renamed in honor of his royal patron.
