
Robyn Kahukiwa
Robyn Kahukiwa was a renowned Māori artist, celebrated for her vibrant and powerful depictions of Māori figures, particularly women. Born in 1938 in Sydney and of Ngāti Porou, Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti, Ngāti Konohi, and Te Whānau-a-Ruataupare descent, Kahukiwa's work often incorporated traditional Māori symbolism and themes of activism, reflecting the struggle for sovereignty and self-determination. She began her artistic career with her first solo exhibition in 1971 and gained recognition both in Aotearoa and internationally. In addition to her visual art, Kahukiwa was also an accomplished author and illustrator of children's books. She passed away recently, leaving a significant legacy in Māori art and culture.
