Sonia del Carmen Pérez is the director of the Escuela República de Belice in Santo Domingo Este. Recently in the news for the low attendance at the school during the start of the new academic year, she reported that out of a total enrollment of 1,049 students, only 318 attended on the first day. Pérez also highlighted ongoing issues with the delivery of school supplies from the Instituto Nacional de Bienestar Estudiantil (Inabie), which has been a source of complaints from parents regarding the lack of necessary educational materials.
