Soylius Mendis
Soylius Mendis, known as the 'Great Artist of Kelaniya', was a pioneering Sri Lankan artist born in 1896. He developed a unique artistic style through persistent practice and self-education in painting and sculpture. Despite his parents' wishes for him to pursue a career in Ayurveda like his father, Mendis became an independent artist renowned for his contributions to the visual arts, including significant projects at various temples across the country. He was instrumental in introducing innovative themes and narratives into traditional Buddhist art, and he established an art school in Bingiriya to nurture young talent. Mendis's legacy continues to influence Sri Lankan art.
