Stalinav Petrov
Stalinav Petrov was a Soviet military officer and engineer best known for his critical decision during a false alarm of a nuclear missile attack in 1983. On September 26, 1983, while on duty at a nuclear early warning station, he received alerts indicating that the Soviet Union was under missile attack. Rather than following protocol to report the incident, which would have likely triggered a catastrophic response, Petrov used his judgment and intuition to assess the situation, ultimately determining that it was a false alarm. His decision is credited with averting a potential nuclear war during a tense period of the Cold War. Despite his pivotal role in preventing disaster, he faced disciplinary action for not reporting the alarm and lived in relative obscurity until later recognition of his actions. Petrov passed away in 2017.
