Symeon I
Symeon I, also known as Symeon the Great, was the ruler of the First Bulgarian Empire from 893 to 927. He is regarded as one of the most significant figures in medieval Bulgarian history, known for his military prowess and political acumen. During his reign, Symeon sought to expand Bulgaria's territory and elevate its status to that of a rival to the Byzantine Empire, which led to a series of conflicts, notably the war against Byzantium that began in 894. His efforts included a series of successful campaigns, culminating in the decisive Battle of Anchialos in 917, where his forces defeated the Byzantine army. Symeon was also instrumental in promoting cultural and educational advancements, having studied in Constantinople, which influenced his vision for a powerful and organized Bulgarian state.
