Tran Duc Luong was a prominent Vietnamese politician who served as the President of Vietnam from 1997 to 2006. Born in 1937 in Quang Ngai Province, he had a long and distinguished career in public service and held various key positions, including Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Deputy Prime Minister. He was a member of the Politburo, representing the Communist Party of Vietnam in multiple capacities. Luong was also known for his contributions to geology as an engineer and served as a honorary professor at the Russian Academy of Sciences. He passed away on May 20, 2025, at the age of 88, prompting national leaders to pay their respects at his funeral in Hanoi.
