
William Higgins
William Higgins was an Irish chemist born in 1762/3 in Collooney, Co Sligo, known for his early advocacy of atomic theory and his contributions to the decline of the phlogiston theory. He played a significant role in the evolution of chemistry during the Industrial Revolution and is remembered for his confrontations with contemporaries, including Richard Kirwan and John Dalton, as well as for his work as a professor of chemistry and mineralogy at the Dublin Society.
