William Tolbert
William Tolbert served as the President of Liberia from 1971 until his assassination in a coup led by Samuel Doe in 1980. He was the last member of the Americo-Liberian ruling class, which comprised descendants of freed American slaves. Tolbert's presidency was marked by attempts at political reform and economic development, but also by growing discontent among the indigenous population, who felt marginalized. His tenure ended violently when he was overthrown and killed, an event that triggered decades of civil unrest in Liberia.
