Alhaji Shehu Shagari was a prominent Nigerian politician who served as the first democratically elected President of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983. A member of the National Party of Nigeria, Shagari's administration focused on economic development and social reforms, although it was also marked by allegations of corruption and inefficiency. His presidency ended with a military coup led by General Muhammadu Buhari in December 1983.
