Alice Auma
Alice Auma, also known as Alice Lakwena, was a Ugandan spiritual leader and the founder of the Holy Spirit Movement in the mid-1980s. Claiming to be possessed by a spirit, she led a rebellion against the Ugandan government, advocating for a return to traditional values and the enforcement of a strict moral code based on her interpretation of the Ten Commandments. Her movement attracted thousands of followers but was ultimately defeated by government forces, leading to the rise of Joseph Kony and the formation of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). Auma's legacy is complex, as she is often seen as a precursor to Kony's violent reign, yet she also represented a unique blend of spirituality and social justice during a tumultuous period in Uganda's history.
