Anwar al-Sadat
Anwar al-Sadat was the President of Egypt from 1970 until his assassination in 1981. He is renowned for his role in the 1973 Yom Kippur War against Israel and for initiating peace negotiations that led to the Camp David Accords in 1978, making Egypt the first Arab nation to recognize Israel. Sadat's policies of infitah, or economic openness, aimed at liberalizing the Egyptian economy, but his leadership also faced significant opposition, especially from Islamic radicals.
