
Armand Călinescu
Armand Călinescu, known as the "man of steel," was a prominent Romanian politician and one of the fiercest opponents of extremism during the interwar period. Born on June 4, 1893, in Pitești to a well-off family, he pursued higher education in law and political science in Romania and France. Călinescu initially aligned with the National Peasant Party but later became a close associate of King Carol II, serving as Prime Minister from 1939 until his assassination in 1939. He was noted for his strong stance against both communist and far-right movements, particularly the Iron Guard, and played a key role in the suppression of extremist ideologies in Romania.
