Benedikt XVI
Pope Benedict XVI, born Joseph Ratzinger, served as the pope from 2005 until his resignation in 2013, becoming the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years. A German theologian, he was known for his conservative stance on many issues and his emphasis on traditional Catholic doctrine. After his resignation, he took the title Pope Emeritus and lived a life of relative seclusion until his passing in December 2022.
