
Cheryl Hickman
Cheryl Hickman is an accomplished opera singer and the general and artistic director of Opera on the Avalon in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. With music degrees from the University of Toronto and the Juilliard School, she has performed with prestigious organizations such as the New York City Opera and the Canadian Opera Company. Hickman founded Opera on the Avalon in 2009 to foster discussions about opera's relevance in contemporary society and has been instrumental in supporting new works through her Creation Investment Fund. Recently, she was appointed as the chair of the Canada Council for the Arts, succeeding Jesse Wente.
