Francisco Antonio Convit Guruceaga
Francisco Antonio Convit Guruceaga, a Venezuelan businessman and grandson of renowned scientist Jacinto Convit, is known as one of the 'bolichicos,' a group of young entrepreneurs who amassed wealth through lucrative contracts with the state during the Chavismo era. He co-founded Derwick Associates, a company that received substantial contracts for building power plants in Venezuela, many of which faced allegations of being unfinished or overbudget. In 2018, he was accused by the U.S. Department of Justice of being part of an international money laundering scheme involving over $1.2 billion diverted from the state oil company Pdvsa. Convit was detained in February 2023 but reportedly escaped from custody at El Helicoide, raising questions about security and corruption within the Venezuelan government.
