Frederik Willem de Klerk was the last State President of apartheid-era South Africa, serving from 1989 to 1994. He is best known for his role in dismantling apartheid and initiating the negotiations that led to the country's first multiracial elections in 1994, alongside Nelson Mandela. For these efforts, de Klerk was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, sharing it with Mandela, in recognition of their joint efforts to peacefully end decades of racial segregation and foster reconciliation in South Africa.
