Indira Gandhi was the first and, to date, the only female Prime Minister of India, serving from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was known for her centralizing policies and significant role in the Indian Emergency (1975-1977), as well as her leadership during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.
