He served as the editor-in-chief of Lidové noviny and later as a senator and Member of the European Parliament representing the TOP 09 party. Throughout his career, Štětina was an outspoken critic of communism and a passionate advocate for human rights, particularly in relation to Ukraine during its political upheavals. He co-founded the non-profit organization Člověk v nouzi, dedicated to humanitarian efforts, and remained active in political discourse until his passing in 2023.
