Joanne Deborah Byron

activist United States

Joanne Deborah Byron, widely known as Assata Shakur, was a prominent African American activist and former member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. Born in Queens, New York, in 1947, she became a significant figure in the civil rights movement during the 1960s and 1970s. Shakur was accused of the 1973 killing of a New Jersey state trooper, a charge she steadfastly denied, claiming a racially biased legal system. After escaping from prison and seeking asylum in Cuba in the 1980s, she lived there for decades until her recent passing at the age of 78. Shakur remains a polarizing figure; considered a hero by many in the black liberation movement, she is viewed by others as a domestic terrorist. Her life and legacy continue to spark debate about race, justice, and activism in America.
