José Antônio Nogueira Belham is a retired Brazilian Army general who served as the commander of the DOI-Codi of the 1st Army during the military dictatorship in Brazil from 1964 to 1985. He has been accused of torturing and being involved in the death of Rubens Paiva, a former deputy and engineer, who was abducted and killed in 1971. Recently, he was in the news due to a protest organized by the Levante Popular da Juventude, demanding accountability for his alleged crimes, as the Supreme Court of Brazil plans to re-evaluate the applicability of the amnesty law protecting military personnel from prosecution for human rights violations.
