King Birendra

King Birendra of Nepal, who reigned from 1972 until his assassination in 2001, is often viewed as a monarch who sought to balance the traditional role of the monarchy with the demands for democracy. He initiated a process towards democratic reforms in the 1990s, which led to the establishment of a constitutional monarchy. His death, along with many members of the royal family, under mysterious circumstances, marked a significant turning point in Nepalese history.
