Lisa Fittko
Lisa Fittko was a German communist and a courageous figure during World War II, known for her critical role in helping Jews and other persecuted individuals escape from Nazi-occupied France to Spain. In 1940, she and her husband, Hans Fittko, established a network that facilitated the safe passage of approximately 250 people over the treacherous Pyrenees mountains. After the war, she emigrated to the United States, where she lived until her death in 2009.
