
Oleg Gordievski
Oleg Gordievski was a former KGB colonel who defected to the United Kingdom in the 1980s and became one of the most significant double agents during the Cold War. He provided critical intelligence to British agencies MI5 and MI6, including insights that helped avert a potential nuclear conflict. In 2007, he was honored by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to national security. Gordievski's dramatic escape from the Soviet Union in 1985, during which he was smuggled out in the trunk of a car, became legendary. He passed away at the age of 86 at his home in Surrey, England.
