Pyotr I, also known as Peter the Great, was the Tsar of Russia from 1682 until his death in 1725. He is renowned for his extensive reforms that modernized Russia and transformed it into a major European power. Pyotr I is credited with establishing the Russian Navy and moving the capital from Moscow to the newly built city of St. Petersburg, which he envisioned as a 'window to Europe.' His reign marked the beginning of the Russian Empire and he is remembered for his efforts to westernize Russian society and government, as well as for his military successes against Sweden during the Great Northern War.
