Robert Holland

Robert Holland was an apprentice butcher and a participant in the Easter Rising of 1916. On his 19th birthday, he found himself stationed at Marrowbone Lane garrison, where he was tasked with slaughtering commandeered cattle to feed the rebels. His personal accounts reflect the harsh realities of war, including his time spent in solitary confinement, where hunger forced him to contemplate the simple pleasures of food, like birthday cake.
