
Tommy Douglas
Tommy Douglas (1904-1986) was a Canadian politician and a leading figure in the establishment of Canada's universal healthcare system. As the Premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961, he implemented groundbreaking social policies, including the introduction of the first publicly funded health insurance program in North America. Douglas was a member of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), which later became the New Democratic Party (NDP), and is often referred to as the 'Father of Medicare' in Canada. His vision for a more equitable society continues to influence Canadian politics today.
