Vasile Ionescu

At 34 years old during the June 1990 Mineriad, Vasile Ionescu was a passionate civil rights activist and co-founder of the Union of Roma Democrats. He witnessed the violent clashes in Bucharest firsthand and experienced the chaos as miners clashed with protesters. His activism was intensified by the racial violence targeted at the Roma community during these events, which he described as a pogrom. Ionescu has since continued to advocate for justice and recognition of these historical injustices, emphasizing the lasting impact of those days on Romanian society.
