He gained infamy for his connection to the murder of DEA agent Enrique 'Kiki' Camarena, whose death was ordered by Rafael Caro Quintero as retaliation for Camarena's infiltration of the cartel. Zavala's body was found alongside Camarena's in 1985, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing war against drug trafficking in Mexico and the United States.
