Boris Elțîn was a Russian politician who served as the first President of the Russian Federation from 1991 to 1999. He is best known for his role in the dissolution of the Soviet Union and for his leadership during the August Coup in 1991, where he famously stood atop a tank to rally support against the coup plotters.
