
John Jacob Astor
John Jacob Astor was a German-American businessman, real estate mogul, and investor, known as the first millionaire in the United States. He made his fortune in fur trading, real estate, and the opium trade before his death in 1848. Astor is also notable for his philanthropic contributions, including the donation of funds for the construction of the Astor Library in New York City, which later became part of the New York Public Library.
