Juan René 'Pupo' Román was a Dominican general and key figure in the military during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. He is noted for his role in the conspiracy that led to Trujillo's assassination in 1961. According to declassified documents, Román was not interested in establishing a democratic government after Trujillo's fall; instead, he sought to position himself as the new strongman of the Dominican Republic.
