Roh Tae-woo

politician South Korea

Roh Tae-woo was a South Korean general and politician who served as the president of South Korea from 1988 to 1993. He played a significant role in the country's transition to democracy following a period of military rule. Initially a co-conspirator in the 1980 coup that brought Chun Doo-hwan to power, Roh later became the first president to be elected through a direct popular vote in South Korea's history. His presidency is noted for initiating significant political reforms and fostering economic growth, but he is also remembered for his involvement in the violent Gwangju Uprising. After leaving office, Roh was convicted of corruption related to his presidency and received a 17-year prison sentence, which was later commuted. He was eventually pardoned in 1997.
